THE PASYRYK RUG

ORIGIN: PERSIA, 5TH CENTURY BC

Are you curious as to how rug repair works, and how cleaning and washing processes developed into what they are today? Look back to the first hand-knotted rugs in the Orient to learn how they were made and what a hand-knotted rug cleaning company of the past would do to please the most selective customers of their time.

The earliest rugs discovered in the Scythian burial mound, handknotted in Persia is the only rug from the Achaemenid period, known as the Pazyryk Rug and preserved up to the present day. According to Erwin Gans-Ruedin in his book, The Splendor of Persian Carpets, this legendary rug was discovered in 1949 by the Russian archaeologist S.I Rudenko, where it had been frozen into a tumulus high in the Altai mountains of Central Asia. The rug was found shockingly intact, carried by a man riding horseback along with some food for a journey.

Presently displayed and preserved in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, its origin dates back to the 5th century B.C. There, artisans mastered the Turkish knot, a practice still used in fine Persian rugs to this day. While archeologists and historians have determined that weaving fine rugs was in practice at least 200 years before the 5th century B.C., the art of weaving achieved an impressive mastery in The Pazyryk Rug, a standard that to this day inspires rug weavers across the world.

Its artful design resembles the sculptures of Persepolis, and many of its details hint to this ancient city (for instance, its double border and the decorative scenes of 28 horses and riders correspond to the number of men who carried the throne of Xerxes to Persepolis). In the inner border, one can distinguish a row of elks or stags grazing. The field is adorned with patterned squares and elegant rosettes reminiscent of the alabaster paving from Ashurbanipal’s palace, currently on display in the British Museum in London, UK.

The process involves individually knotting vast amounts of knots – about 360,000 knots per square meter, or 232 knots per square inch. The quality of an Oriental rug increases with the density of knots, starting from about 100 knots per square inch to the most sought-after and prized rugs on earth, made with 2,000 knots per square inch. Some very fine silk rugs contain up to 4000 knots per square inch and even more.

Handknotted Persian rugswere always considered luxurious and there always existed a pride of ownership with decorating with these rugs. They were passed down from generation to generation during which they were cleaned, washed and repaired regularly.

Azhar’s Oriental Rugs unique one of a kind washing process is designed specifically to simulate the techniques of cleaning of Oriental rugs that have been utilized for centuries utilizing modern tools and technology.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP:

REMOVING ALL SIZES OF DUST PARTICLES FROM THE SURFACE TO THE FOUNDATION OF THE RUG

For achieving a successful quality washing in the first round, it helps to understand the most important step: Thoroughly removing all size of particles from the rug before commencing washing. If you do not successfully remove the dust you are merely scrubbing the dust into the rug.

All rugs contains many sizes of dust particles located on the surface, deep inside the pile in and around the foundation and also microscopic dust particles embedded with time in the fat cell of the organic wool or silk materials.

The rug is placed into a dusting machine that is 24 ft long and 20 ft wide. The machine consists of rotating octagonal cylinder. Thousands of 6 inch leather strips are attached to this cylinder. The cylinder can be rotated at variable  rotating speeds.

The rug moves horizontally on the table while the leather strips rotate and  repeatedly strike every square inch of the back of the rug. The rug goes back and forth on the table covering the entire length for about 20-30 minutes until the operator is satisfied that all large and small dust particles located on the surface and deep into the foundation of rug has been loosened and removed.

Large surface dust particles and finer, deeper particles fall into a funnel where they are sucked out using a large vacuum attached to the machine.

This primary dusting action simulates the same action done for hundreds of years of beating the back of the rug with a beater and removing large dust particles from the rug.

You’d be shocked how much dust is in your rugs. Many of the rugs we service have held up to 10 pounds of dust! This dust can affect the appearance of the rug and worse, your health.
