Contrary to what most people think, a rug’s fringe isn’t just there for decorative purposes. All hand knotted rugs are knotted in a foundation of warp and weft. The fringe is an extension of the warp of the rug on which each knot is knotted. Each line of knots is secured by a weft thread going between each warp. When the fringe is damaged (comes undone), the damage can easily spread to other portions of the rug, with the knots coming out of the rug.
Think of the fringe as the loose thread of a woolen sweater – if you pull it, the rest of the sweater will unravel. The same happens to woolen rugs.
To prevent the damage from extending to other areas of the rug, the fringe needs to be secured to prevent the unraveling of the knots (pile).
There are many types of materials utilized in the warp threads such as cotton, wool, silk, camel hair and also combinations of different fibers.
Azhar’s Fringe Repair Services
Before we begin, our technicians will take a look at the fiber and construction of the rug so we know how to proceed. Our skilled experts will assess the damage done to the fringe and secure it with tight fringe-knots exactly as the original.
If needed, we’ll interweave (re-weave) a new fringe attaching it into the foundation of the rug so it not only looks as close to the original when you first bought it but it is also structurally the same as when you brought it.
Please see videos of the fringe repair process.
