Rug Cleaning and Washing
Your fine hand knotted oriental rugs deserve the best treatment. Nobody knows Oriental Rugs like Azhar’s Oriental Rugs. We have been selling, cleaning and washing rugs since 1973. Azhar’s one-of-a-kind silk and wool Persian rugs cleaning process uses customized equipment simulating centuries-old cleaning techniques making your Oriental rugs look their absolute best.
The Dusting Process:
Dusting rugs on your own isn’t enough to remove all of the dust particles that are embedded deep inside of it. If you attempt home cleaning methods, you can actually scrub dust deeper into it, rather than eliminating it. Excessive vacuuming can actually damage delicate rugs too. Azhar’s Oriental Rugs uses professional Oriental rug cleaning treatments that gently but thoroughly eliminate surface dust, dust deep in the pile, and even fine dust molecules that can become embedded in the fat cells of organic materials like wool and silk.
Dust can make your rugs look older, faded, or even discolored. Very large, dusty rugs can actually make your home smell musty too. Thankfully, our extensive cleaning process works to remove every dust particle possible. You’ll be amazed to see how much dust has collected in your fine rugs.
In order to achieve a successful wash in the first round of cleaning, we ensure that we remove dust from rugs first. Washing and cleaning a dusty rug can actually make the problem worse.
Here’s how it works. First, we set your rug upside-down on a special flat surface, then into a dusting machine. This large machine is 24 feet long and 20 feet wide, large enough to fit most fine rugs. The interior of the machine contains a rotating octagonal cylinder that secures thousands of small leather strips. Once your rug is inside, the cylinder will rotate to agitate the rug at variable speeds. Meanwhile, the leather strips in the machine will strike every square inch of the rug, beating out dust without damaging the rug fibers.
The dust particles that rise out of the rug are sucked through a large funnel and vacuum, which disposes of dust particles outside of the chamber. The entire process lasts about 30 minutes.
The art of striking and beating rugs to remove dust has been used for centuries, ever since the invention of fine Persian rugs. However, we have updated the process to work faster and more thoroughly, even on very large rugs. Our techniques are safe for wool rug cleaning, delicate silk rug cleaning, fine Persian rug cleaning, machine made rugs, and more.
Don’t trap dust in your rugs with poor home treatment alternatives. If you need fine rug cleaning at prices you can afford, call Azhar’s Oriental Rugs. We don’t offer expensive rug cleaning treatments, which is why our customers in Miami and Coral Gables, FL, trust in our dust removal services.

The Washing Process:
Azhar’s Oriental Rugs exclusive Cleaning & Washing Process
Full Immersion
After a thorough dusting process where sometimes more than 10 lbs of dust is extracted from a dirty rug (see video), we begin cleaning with our full immersion technique. Each rug is set into an individual machine and immersed in a natural organic vinegar solution. Don’t try this at home. The wrong vinegar solution can damage your rug with harsh acids. The rugs will rotate gently at about 10 RPM in our special cleaning solution, which can be raised to a temperature of 140 degrees if more intense cleaning is needed.
An operator will closely monitor the rugs as they’re immersed and change the water and solution as necessary until the liquid runs completely clear. See the video below for a demonstration. You won’t believe how much dirt comes out of these rugs!
This exclusive immersion washing process effectively removes all types of stains from rugs, including pet stains, food stains, mud, and more. Full immersion is also effective for eliminating bacteria, allergens, tiny parasites, and other organic materials that may be present in your rugs.
The ancient process of washing rugs on river banks, taking advantage of the clean water and powerful river currents, was effective for removing dust and stains. This is the ancient practice that we have updated and improved on in order to clean your finest rugs.
The Shampooing & Rinsing Process:
Shampooing and rinsing deep cleans your rugs, treating them with environmentally friendly solutions that are delicate on fine, woven fibers.
The rug is removed from the rotating immersion machine and we lay your rugs upside-down in a washing pit as a washing machine equipped with four automatically rotating 20” soft scrubbers softly scrub your rugs. The process is as delicate as washing human hair.
The machine slowly moves back and forth, dispensing clean water and fine, rug-friendly shampoo.
Two employees will constantly monitor the process, one from the front, and the other behind, using large 24” scrubbers to deep clean your rugs. Please view the video below of our process in action.
Then, it’s time to shampoo the front of your rugs. When the water that comes out of the rugs looks clear, your rug is placed right-side-up. The dust embedded in the rug will rise to the surface, where it is then squeezed out. The machine shampoos and rinses the front of the rug delicately, until the rug brightens in color and the water that rinses off the rug runs clear.
At Azhar’s Oriental Rugs, we only use all-natural vinegar cleaners and environmentally friendly shampoos. These products are made specifically for wool and silk fabrics, deep cleaning them while preserving their delicate beauty. We also use special soaps to clean cotton materials, including fringe, which is usually made of cotton.
View the video of fine rugs being cleaned, thoroughly rinsed, and pressed with a squeegee to remove all residual soaps and dust.
Our rugs are re-rinsed repeatedly with the same scrubbing machine using a special, 8.5-pH rinser that removes dust from organic materials like wool and silk. This rinser is effective on hard-to-clean fabrics. It’s important to leave this rinsing process to professionals. If you fail to balance the pH of your rugs to a stable alkaline pH of above 7, you may notice a browning effect on the surface few days later.
The Final Washing out of Residual Shampoo, Soap & Rinser:
A specially designed pressure washer dispenses high volumes of water over rugs to remove all soaps, shampoo, and rinsing agents. A moderate amount of pressure is applied-just enough to clean them, while still delicate.
Once the colors are brightened and all stains removed, the rug is deemed completely cleaned, and it’s placed in the centrifuge, as shown in the video below.
The Centrifuge Water Extraction Process:
The centrifuge works hard to remove all water from your rug, safely drying them through one of multiple methods.
A cleaned rug is rolled up and placed in a machine, a circular one for flat weave rugs or one of 3 rotary machines for other various rugs.
Centrifuges operate between 1200 and 1400 RMP, removing all water from your rugs within 5 minutes.
This is a better method for complete extraction of water from the rug rather than using pressure suction machines or other rotary cylinder equipment to squeeze out the water.
The Drying Process:
Once the rugs are removed from the centrifuges, their pile is set up by brushing the rug in a single direction. Then, they’re placed in a drying room that’s equipped with 5 large dehumidifiers and fans. These machines remove moisture and dry the rugs safely overnight. Up to 20 additional gallons of water may be removed at this time! Removing all water is important to prevent fungal growth or other problems.
Then, the rugs rest in sunlight for about 5 to 6 hours. The warmth from sunlight releases more fine molecules of dust embedded on the tips from organic wool and silk pile. Fat escapes the organic cells, we run high-tech buffers over the rug to remove minuscule particles of dust and the result is a gorgeous luster and inviting texture. Your rugs will look and feel practically new! Please see our video of the delicate buffing process.
The Finishing Process:
The process still isn’t over. As an additional step to beautify your rugs, as the rugs are placed pile side up and the fibers are lifted with a mechanical pile lifter. Pile lifters are equipped with soft, natural, and plant-based brushes, that rotate against the flow of the pile, vacuuming the rugs at the same time. At this point the rugs are already clean, but this extra pull of air opens the pile, whether it’s made of wool or silk, and ensures the fibers don’t stick together. This makes your rugs look and feel ultra-soft.
The Final Step: Dry Steaming
As a last caring touch for your rugs, Azhar’s Oriental Rugs uses innovative dry steaming techniques to remove all residual bacteria, allergens, antigens, and more. Once the rug is 100% clean, the pile of the rug is set to a uniform angle, just as you would do when ironing a wool or silk garment, like a suit.
